The Views

Yesterday was a wonderful, adventure-filled day! My boyfriend, Josiah, and I spent the day together in Birmingham before he left for his study abroad trip in Mexico. We like to call it our daylong date. I would say that some of the highlights of the trip were the views of the city. I've realized that is one of my favorite things to see and do... experience a beautiful view of a city high above and away from the busyness and chaos of being in the midst of it. One of my favorite things about Toledo was the view of the city from La Piedra del Rey Moro. I could go there every day and sit in silence and admire the view of the city. I just love it.

The first thing we did on our daylong date was go hiking at Red Mountain State Park. That was a lot of fun! I think the coolest part was seeing a snake. It was not a venomous snake. It was just crossing the trail. And we stood on the side of the trail, watching it make its way to the trees. It was really neat. We got lunch in downtown Homewood, then I showed Josiah a street in Vestavia Hills that my mom had shown my family a couple days before.

He was unsure about this mission because I mentioned that I had seen some signs that said, "private property". This rule-follower didn't think it was a good idea to get on the swing that I was so excited about. But I did it anyway! He might have rolled his eyes, but he was kind enough to not be mad and freak out. He even took a picture of me on the swing when I asked if he could! It might be a little weird, but that swing with the view of the city made me so happy.

After that, we made our way to Avondale to our favorite ice cream shop in Birmingham, Big Spoon Creamery. I think we both picked some great flavors! I had Rhubarb-Rose Cobbler and Goat Cheese Strawberry Hibiscus in a vanilla cone and Josiah had Rhubarb-Rose Cobbler and Blackberry Honeysuckle in a vanilla cone. Their ice cream was as delicious as always.

After a trip to the store and a fun walk, we bought dinner at a grocery store to bring to Vulcan Park for a picnic. The Vulcan is a cool statue of the Roman god of fire and forge that represents Birmingham's history in iron production. It was designed by Guiseppe Moretti, and it has been where it stands today since the 1930s.

We went up all 159 steps to get to the top. We stayed at the top for I don't even know how long. But I didn't want to leave. We had such a beautiful view of the city and the sunset. There's just something about these views from today. It makes me so happy to just sit in silence and look at the city lights and sunset, in awe of God's creation and power.

I'll leave you with two song recommendations because they are relevant and stuck in my head. As the song was playing during one of our car rides, Josiah said that "Drive" by Ben Rector summarizes our day pretty well. I agree; we drove all over the city and had fun going from adventure to adventure. Another song that came into my mind is "Sunshine & City Lights" by Greyson Chance. This is another one of our favorites that reminds us of the free feeling of exploring a city together. I love the idea of the sunshine and city lights guiding our travels and adventures. Yesterday, we had the Birmingham city lights and the beautiful sunset guiding our daylong date.

I'm really thankful that we've had this day to spend together. God used this day to remind me who he is. He is the most amazing artist. He orchestrates my days perfectly. He is my provider of rest and joy. He is incredibly good.
